Dr. Lauren Amicone - Principal

I have served as an educator in Kansas City for the past seven years as a teacher, instructional coach and vice principal. This is my fifth year with KCPS, and I am honored to hold the privilege of transitioning to the role of Principal at Garfield Elementary School for the upcoming school year. I am excited to have been afforded the opportunity to partner in fulfilling a vision in which all students are empowered to become 21st century citizens by investing in rigorous culturally responsive instruction, forging relationships and partnering with community stakeholders.

I am a proud graduate of The Ohio State University. I earned a Masters in Education degree from UMSL and my Ed.S. in School Leadership from UMKC. I graduated with my Doctorate in Education PK-12 Administration from UMKC in May 2022, measuring the impact of the misalignment of mathematics preparation on college access. Outside of education, I enjoy exploring new parts of the city with my husband and two young children.

I look forward to ensuring that all students learn at grade level or higher and commit myself to working diligently to ensure Garfield is a place utilizing data-informed instruction and professional collaboration so that students master learning standards to further their college and career goals.

Chelsea Millar - Vice Principal

I am excited to be joining the Garfield staff as Vice Principal! I have worked in KCPS for the past 4 years as an instructional coach at Trailwoods and James Elementary, and as an English Language Arts curriculum coordinator for the district. This is my eleventh year in education, and I have had the pleasure of serving in several roles during this time; including as a classroom teacher and reading interventionist in Lawrence, KS and in New Orleans, LA. I am also currently pursuing a Doctor of Education degree at UMKC in PK-12 Administration.

Carrie Button - Instructional Coach

Carrie Button Instructional Coach

I am Ms. Button and I have had the pleasure of being the instructional coach at Garfield for the past 9 years. During my 22 years in education, I have had the opportunity to serve as a teacher in kindergarten, first, second, third, fifth, and Reading Intervention. Coaching at Garfield is my dream job because I get the chance to work with our fantastic teachers and all of our students feel like my students. My core values are Growth, High Expectations, and Making a Difference. In my down time I enjoy gardening, spending time with my family and my pets, and watching football (Arrowhead is my happy place) Go Chiefs!
