Administration

Welcome to the 2022 – 2023 school year! I am very excited to embark in this new year as your principal. I am thankful for the opportunity to engage with many of you this summer and commit to upholding Garfield’s mission that all students will learn at grade level or higher.

We are so excited for you to return to a new year full of thinking, learning, and FUN! Your scholar is in excellent hands with our dedicated Garfield staff. We have been planning and preparing this summer to ensure your student will achieve growth towards and beyond proficiency goals through the consistent use of data-informed instruction, professional collaboration so that they master learning standards to further their college and career goals. Below is some back to school information for you to review:

The 2022-2023 school year begins on Monday, August 22, 2022, for all students. Teaching and learning starts promptly at 8:20 AM and ends at 3:20 PM. Students are encouraged to arrive at 8:00 AM to have plenty of time to eat breakfast and engage with their classmates.

School Goals:
  1. Attendance: Our school-wide attendance goal is to have a rate of 90% or higher. We need your support by ensuring students attend school each day, all day!
  2. 2. Student Achievement: We want to decrease the number of students who are two or more years behind in ELA and Math by 50% on iReady assessments. You can help at home by encouraging your child to read for 30 minutes each night and practice math facts (+, -, x, /).
Save the Date:

Thursday, August 18, 2022 from 4:30 PM– 6:00 PM, we will host a Back to School Night to provide families an opportunity to come to visit the school, meet teachers, share information and ask questions.

At Garfield, we value collaboration between our school and families. Thank you for your support and cooperation in helping to make our school the best it can be. I look forward to a fantastic school year!

Warm Regards, Dr. Lauren Amicone Principal | Garfield Elementary

Dr. Lauren Amicone - Principal

Dr. Lauren Amicone - Principal

I have served as an educator in Kansas City for the past seven years as a teacher, instructional coach and vice principal. This is my fifth year with KCPS, and I am honored to hold the privilege of transitioning to the role of Principal at Garfield Elementary School for the upcoming school year. I am excited to have been afforded the opportunity to partner in fulfilling a vision in which all students are empowered to become 21st century citizens by investing in rigorous culturally responsive instruction, forging relationships and partnering with community stakeholders.

I am a proud graduate of The Ohio State University. I earned a Masters in Education degree from UMSL and my Ed.S. in School Leadership from UMKC. I graduated with my Doctorate in Education PK-12 Administration from UMKC in May 2022, measuring the impact of the misalignment of mathematics preparation on college access. Outside of education, I enjoy exploring new parts of the city with my husband and two young children.

I look forward to ensuring that all students learn at grade level or higher and commit myself to working diligently to ensure Garfield is a place utilizing data-informed instruction and professional collaboration so that students master learning standards to further their college and career goals.

Chelsea Millar - Vice Principal

I am excited to be joining the Garfield staff as Vice Principal! I have worked in KCPS for the past 4 years as an instructional coach at Trailwoods and James Elementary, and as an English Language Arts curriculum coordinator for the district. This is my eleventh year in education, and I have had the pleasure of serving in several roles during this time; including as a classroom teacher and reading interventionist in Lawrence, KS and in New Orleans, LA. I am also currently pursuing a Doctor of Education degree at UMKC in PK-12 Administration.

I am Ms. Button and I have had the pleasure of being the instructional coach at Garfield for the past 9 years. During my 22 years in education, I have had the opportunity to serve as a teacher in kindergarten, first, second, third, fifth, and Reading Intervention. Coaching at Garfield is my dream job because I get the chance to work with our fantastic teachers and all of our students feel like my students. My core values are Growth, High Expectations, and Making a Difference. In my down time I enjoy gardening, spending time with my family and my pets, and watching football (Arrowhead is my happy place) Go Chiefs!
